Odeo Flyer

Jack brought his kite to Odeo yesterday.
Noah wanted to fly it.
So, we all took to the roof for a demonstration.

That sucker can really go!
Noah had to hold Jack down a little there.
Can't wait to see what it can do over some surf.

Celebrity Dog

Vito's Friends

My family has had Boston Terriers for years. My parents' pup is named Vito. He's a champ.

My mom just gave him his own channel on Odeo, and it's been featured today.

How would your pet use the Odeo Studio?

Missing Site Overlay

Google Analytics From Jeff at Google Analytics:
The demand for Google Analytics exceeded our expectations. As a result, we have temporarily removed the site overlay tool report. Once we have increased our capacity to process this report effectively, we will add the report back to Google Analytics. You can see link popularity statistics in other Content Optimization reports, such as the "Top Content" report or the "All Navigation" report.
The turnaround was under 24 hours. That's good support. I hope the Site Overlay is back up soon - it's a killer feature.

A Bug's Life at Odeo

Odeo is Agile:
  1. Log and/or assign bug
  2. Bug gets fixed and checked in, I get pinged
  3. Review changes to code via Web
  4. If neccesary, test locally or deploy to testing server
  5. Tweak changes myself or send back to developer
  6. Repeat 2-5 until satisfied
  7. Close bug
It's great to take part in the fixing process, but I notice that when I'm developing, my QA brain kind of takes a nap. Gotta get better about eating my own cooking.

Wiki Gnome

viola! During a recent visit, Merlin Mann said to me,
Oh, so you're the Odeo Wiki Gnome!
What's that? Supposedly, it's someone who's always improving the Wiki, fussing over it, fixing it, adding to it. The Wiki requires maintenance.

Sorry, you can't see it. That's where we keep all of our secret formulae. Wherever I am, I can edit those pages and refine Odeo. I watch the RSS feed of all the changes, I go around linking things. The editor is built in.

It's a lot slower than using Dreamweaver to just generate the code, but when you find yourself without - hey there's Jot! They're constantly improving it, too, which helps.

It's fun, being a gnome. Listen to Ev talk about it.

Episode III Again

Revenge of the Sith dvd Ah crap. Now I'm into Star Wars again. The DVD came out, and of course I had pre-ordered it. And of course, I dive right into the deleted scenes (disappointing) and the featurettes.

One featurette, called "Within a Minute," details the process of creating about 50 seconds of film. The scene near the end where Obi and Ani fight on the lava planet, and that piece of ironwork falls off and starts floating down the river of lava.

Really incredible, how much work went into just that scene! They did a great job weaving the music into the featurette, too, so that by the time it was over I was all geared up to watch the movie again.

Instead of watching it, I've been listening to the music again. I'm impressed by how strongly the music makes me feel, still. I'm brought back to the days this summer when I was listening to it all the time.

Pretty soon, I'm going to watch the movie again. But, I gotta psyche myself up - it's a scary, sad movie. Poor Anakin. Poor Padme. Poor Yoda. Poor me; gotta watch it 50 more times just to catch up with the original trilogy!

Ben the Monkey

My brother Ben is a high school teacher. He is also the head of the wrestling program at his school. So, he trained on the ropes in order to inspire his kids to climb them. Mom caught this demonstration on camera.

Pretty amazing - makes me want to go climb something right now!

How to Learn to Code

Read it. Ruby is about as WYSIWYG as it gets, especially when it's written elegantly. Even if you can't understand it all, become familiar with it. It'll sink in.

Translate it. Once you've read it, describe it. This helps when talking with other engineers, and when searching for help.

Test it. Write tests to make sure the code does what it says. Better yet, write the tests first!

Break it. Sabotage your code and see if the tests notice; test the tests. Breaking things is a path to learning.
